Anger Management Services
Anger is just anger. It isn’t good. It isn’t bad. It just is. What you do with it is what matters. It’s like anything else. You can use it to build or to destroy. You just have to make the choice. ~ Jim Butcher
If you are considering anger management, chances are you’re tired of feeling out of control, or have experienced enough negative consequences to encourage a readiness for change. Whether you are self-referred, given an ultimatum by a loved one, or court ordered you may be surprised at how much you can gain from learning alternative strategies to get your needs met. Anger Management is typically 6-8 sessions, which will be determined after your initial session. Your therapist will use education along with modeling and role-playing to address anger management challenges.
Some of the objectives of Anger Management are to:
Define what anger is and is not.
Distinguish between anger and aggression.
Normalize anger as a feeling, not a character flaw.
Identify physical, emotional, cognitive and behavioral cues of anger, which often precedes aggression.
Discuss how self-awareness allows you to be responsive, rather than emotionally reactive.
Explore the Aggression Cycle and ways you can change inappropriate behavioral patterns.
Learn Assertiveness Training and Conflict Resolution as alternatives for expressing anger.
Discover how learned behaviors from your family of origin influences your present behaviors.
Once anger has been identified, explored, and new coping strategies have been placed in your tool box, you may become curious about the origin of your experiences with anger. Often clients find that Anger Management is a seamless transition into individual, family or couples therapy to address problems underlying their anger. Upon successful completion, clients will receive a Certificate of Completion, which if applicable will satisfy court requirements.
